We’re making some temporary changes to make Abergavenny safe for our communities to return and support our local shops and businesses. A fantastic marketing strategy has already started.
Enlarged pedestrian areas will be provided at the bus station.
Cross Street will be closed from 10am to 4pm from The Angel Hotel and extending into Market Street, to the rear of town hall. Fifteen on-street parking bays will be unavailable, and a further eight on-street parking spaces along Frogmore Street will be removed. We are seeking to re-provide those spaces elsewhere if possible. On-street parking spaces on Lion Street, between Market Street and the A40, will be pushed further into the carriageway. These measures will provide greater space for social distancing for pedestrians.
Social distancing markers will be provided at key pedestrian crossings across the A40.
Phase 2 comprises a 20mph zone with speed reduction measures at entrance points covering the whole of Abergavenny and Llanfoist. Details will be posted here when they are finalised. The Council is liaising with the Welsh Government Trunk Roads Agency to seek agreement to include the part of the A40 passing through the town centre in the 20mph zone.
All of the changes are part of a trial. We will be seeking live feedback and we will tweak, add to, change or remove measures as appropriate. We will learn quickly and adapt as we go to improve based on feedback. If some of the changes are successful, we will consider making them permanent, following future consultation.
