As per the Learner Travel Measure and Monmouthshire’s Transport Policy free home to school transport will only be provided to pupils who attend their catchment or nearest school and live more than 1.5 miles from their Primary School and more than 2 miles from their Secondary School. These distances relate to the shortest available walking route between home and school, accompanied by an adult if necessary.
Although each school has a catchment area under the council’s school admissions policy, parents can express a preference for any school they would like their child to attend. If you choose to send your child to a school that is not your catchment or nearest, then you have exercised your parental preference and in doing so you will have lost your right to free home to school transport. This means you will be responsible for the transport arrangements for your child to attend your chosen school for the duration of their education.
If your application to a preferred school is not successful, you will qualify for help with transport only if you child attends either the catchment school as an alternative or the next nearest available school (decided by the council) and if the qualifying distance is met.
Pupils already in receipt of Free Home to School Transport do not need to re-apply for transport unless they have moved home address or changed school.
If there is a change of school, home address or if the council finds a shorter walking route within the distance criteria limit, a child may no longer be eligible for Free Home to School Transport.
There are certain circumstances where discretionary transport may be awarded despite the learner not meeting the distance criteria. If your child has a medical condition or disability that impacts their ability to walk to school you will be able to apply for discretionary transport. This is awarded annually and we will require medical evidence to support your application.
