Black bags
You must not bring unsorted waste to the Recycling Centre. Residents bringing in black bags will be asked to open and sort any recyclable items. Over 50% of items brought in black bags are recyclable.
DIY waste policy
DIY waste is restricted to five bags or a small car boot load per visit with a maximum of two visits per month.
DIY waste refers only to materials arising from small scale works in a householders own property. For large scale works, householders are expected to use a private waste contractor and hire a skip.
DIY waste is accepted at Llanfoist and Five Lanes Recycling Centres.
Mitchel Troy is smaller site and can only accept very small amounts of DIY waste.
On arrival at the site, you must make contact with site staff.
Asbestos policy
Asbestos is hazardous waste and we would recommend that you contact a specialist contractor to deal with any asbestos waste safely.
Small amounts of Asbestos from a householder will be accepted at Five Lanes or Llanfoist HWRCs. Whole sheets must be double wrapped in heavy duty polythene and sealed with heavy duty tape.
We will accept no more than 4 standard sized sheets per year, of no greater size than 120cm by 60cm. If a householder wishes to dispose of more than this they are expected to hire a specialist contractor.
Householders should be aware that HWRC site staff are not permitted to handle asbestos, so they must be capable of putting it in the container on site without assistance. Please speak to a member of staff on site and they will advise you where to place the waste.
Other
Car or vehicle parts are not accepted at the recycling centre. This is not classed as household waste and should be taken to a vehicle breaker. Only car batteries are accepted.
The following items cannot be taken to Mitchel Troy recycling centre: Asbestos, large household appliances (cookers, dishwashers, tumble dryers or washing machines) and gas cylinders. These items can be accepted at Five Lanes or Llanfoist recycling centres.
NO business waste
Businesses have a statutory duty to make arrangements for their own waste disposal. They are not allowed to use the Recycling Centre. Business/trade waste can be disposed of at Llanfoist and Five Lanes sites over the weighbridge at competitive commercial rates (details on site). To ensure compliance with the site’s permits, a valid “Waste Carrier Licence” should be produced prior to using the sites. Site personnel will be happy to help businesses obtain this licence.
You can contact the site regarding disposal of business waste: Five lanes – 01633 400394 or Llanfoist 01873 736261. Opening hours: 7:30 to 15:45.
