Monmouthshire fully support and are committed to Welsh Governments national strategy Cymraeg 2050, which introduces a long term vision for a Wales where the Welsh Language thrives. The establishment of a third Welsh medium primary school in Monmouthshire is a central element of our Welsh in Education Strategic Plan. Which focuses on increasing the number of pupils being taught through the medium of Welsh by 2031.
On 18th January 2023, the Council’s Cabinet agreed to commence statutory consultation processes on the proposal to establish a Welsh medium primary school in Monmouth.
Statutory consultation on the proposal concluded on the 15th May 2023 so therefore the consultation report has been published.
The consultation report represents the Council’s responsibility in accordance with the School Organisation Code to publish a consultation report that:
- Provides a summary of the comments / concerns raised by consultees.
- Responds to these by means of clarification, amendment to the proposal or rejection of the concerns with supporting reasons.
- Sets out Estyn’s response to the consultation in full and responds to Estyn’s response by means of clarification, amendment to the proposal or rejection of the concerns, with supporting reasons.
In terms of next steps, Monmouthshire’s Cabinet will meet on the 7th June 2023 to consider the consultation report; the recommendations made to them and decide whether they wish to proceed to the next stage of the statutory process which is to publish statutory notices.
The proposals outlined above must now be published by way of statutory notice. The statutory notice will be formally published on Monday 19th June 2023. The Objection period has now closed and the objection report has been published below.
The Council’s Cabinet met again on the 6th September 2023 to consider the content of the Objection Report and the statutory objections received. They made the final decision to proceed with the establishment of a seedling Welsh-medium primary school with effect from 1st September 2024.
