From the 1st April 2014 Monmouthshire County Council has not provided a pest control service to residents for the treatment of rats, mice, fleas or bedbugs. There is no legal duty for a local authority to provide such a service and in common with many other local authorities, Monmouthshire has faced difficult choices about which services to fund.
Under the provisions of The Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 owners / occupiers are responsible for keeping their own land free from rats / mice.
If you have a problem we strongly advise that you engage a bona fide pest control company rather than tackle the problem directly yourself.
Environmental Health does not commission treatments for rat infestations but we will offer advice to residents and businesses should they need it and require steps to be taken for the destruction of rats on private land where such steps are not being taken.
