We have two family therapists who work in the community from Monmouthshire County Council hubs in Abergavenny, Monmouth and Chepstow.

Family therapy focuses on supporting the whole family in order to support the child. Family Therapy is a confidential service which provides therapeutic support to families who are experiencing difficulties.

Families decide to come to family therapy sessions because of a variety of problems, such as: challenging behaviour, arguing and fighting, stress, parental divorce and separation, changes in the family structure, anxiety, school attendance or communication breakdown. Families come to us because their usual ways of managing difficulty are no longer working.

Through conversation we and the family think about unhelpful patterns that keep them stuck and unable to find their own solutions. Through discussion and exploration, we help families identify alternative ways of addressing the difficulties and support them in implementing changes where necessary.

Ideally we like to meet the whole family as it useful to hear everyone’s ideas about how they see the difficulties. Often, not everyone can or wants to attend so we see whoever can come.

Both family therapists are experienced Non Violent Resistance (NVR) practitioners.  NVR is an approach that focuses on the parent-child relationship and on supporting parents to connect with their child and resist controlling and destructive behaviour.

Sarah Rogers and Erica Pavord – We have two family therapists, a systemic psychotherapist, who is an accredited member of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapists (UKCP), and a systemic practitioner. Both are registered members of the Association of Family Therapy (AFT). This means they follow a professional code of ethics and follow good practice guidelines set by these professional bodies.
