The Education Welfare Officer will work with the school to monitor and audit the attendance of pupils each term. They will discuss the impact of interventions to improve the attendance of pupils. Any pupils with attendance under 95 per cent will be discussed with the school.
If attendance remains a concern, despite interventions from the school, the school can then make a referral to its Education Welfare Officer (EWO) who will work with the school and meet with parents/school and other services if appropriate to try to resolve the situation.
Monmouthshire has a very proactive Education Welfare Service and will try to address attendance issues by providing advice and support to avoid the need for legal action.
However if there is no improvement in attendance then legal action will be considered.
