Mother and daughter live independently at home, thanks to Monmouthshire County Council’s Assistive and Smart Technology in partnership with Social Care & Health. They have embraced modern technology, allowing them to enjoy their entire home together, comfortably and safely
Smart Room Lighting
Using a standard lamp daily became challenging due to its inconvenient position and height, increasing the risk of falls or stumbling in the dark.
Assistive & Smart Technology Solution
The Assistive technology team recommended a voice command app integrated with a Smart Speaker and Display to control Smart light bulbs. These bulbs can be fitted to any standard lamp or ceiling light and can be easily instructed to “Turn on” and “Turn off.”
Using voice commands, lights can be controlled without needing to physically get up, reducing the risk of falls and helping to navigate the home safely at night. Additionally, this solution helps save on electricity costs by ensuring lights are only on when needed.

Alarm Receiving Centre: 24-Hour Emergency Response
A mother and daughter strive to live as independently as possible, finding reassurance in their Alarm Receiving Centre, which offers 24-hour emergency response whenever needed.
Assistive & Smart Technology Solution
The mother wears a wrist-worn pendant alongside her watch, while the daughter opts for a neck pendant to keep her wrist free for wheelchair use. Both pendants are connected to a Alarm Receiving Centre, which links to a 24-hour call centre ready to respond to any emergency.
This system provides them with the peace of mind that help is always immediately available if needed.

Falls prevention
The mother had a large window adorned with heavy curtains. As her mobility declined, she found it increasingly challenging to open and close them. Her daughter, who is a wheelchair user, also struggled with the curtains because of the furniture arrangement. The curtains were crucial for maintaining privacy and keeping the room warm during winter.
Assistive & Smart Technology Solution
The Assistive Technology team installed Curtain Openers and Closers that can be controlled via a voice command app. This solution allows them to maintain their privacy while easily enjoying daylight when needed, without the risk of falling or stumbling over furniture.
