Monmouthshire County Council continues actively engaging with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) regarding the necessary work to reopen Inglis Bridge in Monmouth.

Discussions have been progressing at the highest level to resolve this situation. However, Inglis Bridge remains closed to pedestrians following a survey conducted by the MOD, which indicated that the bridge is unsafe for public access.

The current Emergency Closure Notice is due to expire on 3rd April.

As no resolution with the MOD has been reached, a further six-month extension is currently being sought until the MOD completes the necessary work to make the bridge safe for public use.

Monmouthshire County Council has consistently engaged with the MOD about the reopening and strongly urges the organisation to find a resolution.

Council Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, contacted the MOD again to express the council’s profound disappointment with the lack of progress in restoring Inglis bridge.  The council has still not received any confirmation regarding a timeline for the commencement of the work.

Council Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby, said: “The council recognises the residents’ rightful concerns and the impacts of the bridge’s closure on everyone in our Monmouth community. We continue to press the MoD for clarity about the work needed and a date for the reopening of Inglis bridge.

“We share the frustration and inconvenience this closure has caused. We remain committed to keeping the public informed with regular updates on the progress of the discussions and any developments.”

Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs, Housing & Tourism, Cllr Sara Burch, said: ” Inglis Bridge is a vital link for the community to access green space and local amenities.

“Seeking an extension for the closure is the last thing we want to do, but due to the lack of updates or progress by the MOD, we are seeking it to ensure the safety of all.”
