Monmouthshire County Council recently welcomed John Griffiths, MS for Newport East & Severnside, to visit some of the apprentices working for the council.
On Monday, February 10th, John Griffiths MS visited the West End Flying Start Centre and Severn View Park Care Home in Caldicot, alongside Paul Griffiths, MCC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development.
Apprenticeship Week Wales is an annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships and the value they bring to learners, employers, and the wider Welsh economy.
During the visit, both representatives spoke to current apprentices to learn more about their experiences as they carried out their duties while gaining qualifications.
The visit highlighted the positive impact of apprentices in providing services to residents while also showcasing how talent development and workforce upskilling benefit both individuals and the organisation.
Monmouthshire County Council is committed to its responsibility for workforce development. It’s essential to anticipate the skills and experiences needed for future growth, and the councils’ apprenticeship opportunities are helping us ensure the workforce can adapt and continue to provide the best services to residents.
Throughout the council, apprenticeships allow individuals to gain experience in various aspects of local government roles, from frontline roles in social care to support functions in the office, all while allowing them to remain in the county and earn qualifications and employment.
MCC Deputy Leader Cllr Paul Griffiths noted: “Apprenticeships are an invaluable pathway for both individuals and businesses, offering hands-on experience while building vital skills for the future.
“By investing in apprenticeships, we not only equip our existing staff with new expertise but also bring in fresh talent eager to learn and grow. They provide unique opportunity to shape the workforce of tomorrow while strengthening the local economy today.
“Monmouthshire Council strongly embrace apprenticeships as a key tool for development, innovation and long-term success.”

The council aspires to develop an ‘Apprentice First’ approach, placing apprentices at the forefront of recruitment and expanding opportunities for more individuals to join the council. We will continue collaborating with our schools to promote apprenticeships among young people, showcasing the opportunities available at Monmouthshire County Council for school leavers.
