On 4 February 2025, Monmouthshire County Council’s Planning Committee approved the development of 96 new affordable homes.

Approval was given to developing 46 homes at Mabey Bridge in the Brunel Quarter of Chepstow. The new homes will be in three low-rise apartment blocks, including 32 one bedroom flats and 14 two bedroom flats. The homes will be constructed by Barratt Homes and then transferred to the Registered Social Landlord, Pobl.

Approval was given to developing 50 homes at Tudor Road, Wyesham in Monmouth. The homes will be constructed by Edenstone and transferred to the Registered Social Landlord, Monmouthshire Housing Association.

Cllr Paul Griffiths, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “The provision of Affordable Housing is at the heart of the County Council’s mission to provide a fairer, greener and more successful county.

“I thank our partners Edenstone and Barratts, Pobl and MHA. It is through these effective partnerships that we can all achieve the goal of serving our communities. These homes will be of the highest standard of design. Meeting or exceeding the standards set by the Welsh Government for social housing, they will be highly energy efficient and built with all the accessibility needed for lifetime homes. They will be attractive homes built in the most attractive locations.

“Since the Council was elected in 2022, less than three years ago, we have given planning consent for 208 affordable homes.

“When our proposed Replacement Local Development Plan is approved, we will create the opportunity to provide land and a planning policy framework for at least 1000 Net zero carbon affordable homes to be delivered by 2033”.

“Each affordable home transforms the life of an individual or family. Our programme of delivering affordable homes will transform the county; creating a younger, more productive population which can sustain our local economy, towns and villages, schools and public services.”
