On Saturday, 30 November, Caldicot Castle was filled with warmth and support as young people and families gathered for the annual Remembering Event, hosted by Monmouthshire County Council.

Since its inception in 2016, this event has provided a safe space for those who have experienced loss to connect with their emotions and share memories during what can be an incredibly challenging time.

The day included a variety of carefully planned creative activities designed to help families navigate their feelings of grief. Participants engaged in gingerbread decorating, a quiz and creating special memory labels for a Christmas tree.

Participants also took part in face painting and a role-playing game inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, uniquely designed around Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s five stages of grief. The game saw players embark on a magical galleon, visiting islands representing the five stages of grief and engaging in dialogue and interactions related to each stage.

A highlight of the day for many was the opportunity to create table decorations. Each participant brought their unique ideas to life, choosing from a variety of materials, colors, and themes.

As the event concluded, families gathered outside to blow bubble wands filled with wishes and memories for their loved ones, symbolising hope and connection.

Attendees were encouraged to share their stories and experiences, leading to meaningful conversations and the forging of new friendships.

The event was supported by Monmouthshire County Council’s dedicated Children Services team, which includes trained counsellors and numerous volunteers committed to helping families.

Cllr Ian Chandler, Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, Safeguarding, and Accessible Health Services, expressed gratitude for the support provided to families: “It’s vital to assist children and families during these difficult times. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who continue to support young people throughout the year. Our dedicated team is here to help anyone who may be feeling vulnerable.”
